Drawing and Painting
Artist Statement: Inspiration for my work comes from my experiences and the environment I've grown up in. What inspires me to make art is that not only can I have a piece of myself reflected in my work but others can as well. My pieces show the hard realities of being a person of color in America, the confusion as to why we have to go through injustices like police brutality and missing and murdered Indigenous women, and the fear and toll on mental health that comes with seeing our people die due to these injustices. But one of my pieces is also meant to celebrate where we come from. It is meant to embrace the beauty and importance of elders in Indigenous communities and other communities as well. I hope when viewers see my work they can see themselves in it, but more importantly they can see the magnitude of the injustices against Indigenous communities.
Artist Bio: My name is Betanya Fida, I am 15 years old, and I attend Saint Agnes High School. I've lived in St. Paul my whole life and art has been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember. Other than my art classes in school, I don't have any training but I have learned a lot in school. My major influences into becoming serious about my art is my art teacher and my family who have taught me so much and have helped me grow in one of the things I love doing the most. And coming from an Ethiopian background, art from different cultures inspire me to work with different styles and methods of art..
