Bob Schmitt
Chinese Calligraphy and Painting

ARTIST STATEMENT: I am often asked if I create these painting on site, sitting by the falls or the lakes. I do not.  They are not created on site. They are paintings from my memory of these places.  My goal is to capture the essence of a place as it lives in my memory and hopefully to touch that place where it lives in your memory. If I am successful, they may evoke a sensation that feels more real than if they were photographic representations.  May you find some measure of hope and peace in this artwork as I have found in creating it.

In Dreams of Six Grandfathers, I am attempting to extend my ability to capture the essence of places I hold in my heart to a place that was/is held in the hearts of indigenous people. This place was destroyed in the creation of what we know as Mount Rushmore. My intent is to try to capture the presence and sacredness of a place as a way to call it forward out of memory.
